There’s even a phrase these days — “the bath-skipping crowd.” But how about your coat care routine? Just like your body, a coat needs to be kept clean to prevent odors, stains, and even loss of performance. Areas that come into frequent contact with skin or dirt — like the collar, cuffs, and hem — deserve a little extra attention now and then. You don’t need to send it to the cleaners often; a few simple at-home care habits will go a long way.
You’ll need just three things: a wash tub, a brush, and a detergent made for outdoor wear. Waterproof and breathable fabrics — like GORE-TEX — can lose their water repellency as dirt builds up. Specialized detergents remove that buildup while helping to maintain or restore the fabric’s original performance. If you don’t have one on hand, a diluted neutral detergent will work as a substitute.
Use about 1 milliliter of detergent per 1 liter of water. Once the solution is ready, soak the coat — focusing on areas that tend to collect dirt, like the collar lining and cuffs — for about 10 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush.
Once washing is complete, rinsing becomes the key step. Any detergent residue left behind can weaken the waterproof and breathable properties of the fabric. Don’t stop after a single rinse — repeat two or three times to ensure all detergent is completely removed.
Finally, pat away any excess water with a towel and dry the coat promptly using a hair dryer or similar method. You can also hang it to dry in the shade, but the best option is a tumble dryer — applying heat helps reactivate the water-repellent finish on the GORE-TEX surface, restoring its performance. A low-temperature setting, up to around 60°C, is recommended.
With regular care like this, you’ll likely find yourself needing professional cleaning less often. A coat is part of your everyday life — a little maintenance goes a long way in keeping it comfortable and lasting for years.
