Why is brushing important?
I was watching an old movie, and there was a scene where the protagonist comes home and casually brushes their favorite coat. It’s such a small, effortless gesture — yet there’s something undeniably elegant about it. But it makes you wonder: why brush a coat in the first place?
It turns out, the reason is surprisingly practical. A coat doesn’t just shield you from rain and wind — it also catches dust, exhaust, and even bits of mud along the way. Of course, you can’t wash it after every wear. That’s why daily brushing matters: it removes surface dirt and keeps the fabric in good condition. Once you know that, it feels only natural to give it a try.
It’s not difficult to do. Simply brush in one direction — from top to bottom — to remove dust. Moving the brush back and forth can damage the fabric, so that’s the one thing to watch out for. I use a horsehair brush, which is gentle enough for nylon and cotton, and even safe to use on wool knits.
For pants, focus your brushing on areas prone to wrinkling, such as the knees and around the hips. This is especially important for natural fabrics — brushing helps lift the flattened fibers after sitting, preventing the material from wearing out over time.
There’s no special trick to it — what matters most is doing it regularly. When you get home, before washing your hands or gargling, give your coat a quick brush. Keep the brush by the door, and it’ll soon become second nature.
Brush your coat as you say “I’m home.” That small daily ritual might just be the simplest way to make it last for years.
What if it gets wet in the rain?

Hang the wet coat on a hanger and gently blot away surface moisture with a dry towel. Then, either let it dry away from direct sunlight in the shade, or use a circulator to help it along. Think of it like caring for your own hair: removing excess moisture properly keeps it in good condition and helps it last much longer.
